Albion are being priced out of their attempt to land Swindon skipper and centre-half Gordon Greer.

Town value the Scot at £450,000, which is way above the figure offered by the Seagulls.

They are willing to pay £250,000 for Greer, who is 29 and has only a year left on his contract.

The Argus exclusively revealed Albion’s interest in Greer earlier this month. They want him both as a captaincy replacement for Andrew Crofts, following the midfielder’s move to Norwich, and for his experience and organisational qualities at the heart of the defence after Adam Virgo was released.

Chairman Tony Bloom said: “We have made a second offer, which we consider to be very fair, but it is miles away from Swindon’s valuation. We have other options so we’re moving on.”

Swindon may yet lower their sights, especially if Greer is keen on the move, as he will be entitled to a free transfer next summer.

But they have already lost prolific striker Billy Paynter to Leeds since reaching the League One play-off final and are desperate to keep hold of the influential stopper.

Chairman Andrew Fitton said: “Because we were successful last season we have had a lot of clubs asking how much for a number of our players.

“And the answer to most of them is the same as what I have said previously – that I wouldn’t get out of bed for it.

“It is obvious that we’ve built a successful squad and now want to build on that. We have already lost a few players over the summer and need to replace what we have lost, not lose more.

“Everything has its price, and any club below halfway down the Premier League is a selling club, but that is not to say that anybody is for sale.

“You can never rule out anything but I am not expecting us to sell our prized assets.”
