Crawley have smashed their transfer record for the second time in a week to sign wideman Sergio Torres.

The 26-year-old became Steve Evans’ ninth summer signing yesterday when he joined from League One Peterborough for a fee in excess of £100,000.

Last week Reds paid just under that amount for striker Matt Tubbs.

Torres had a trial with Albion when he arrived from Argentina in 2004 and made 86 appearances for Wycombe between 2005-08 before his £150,000 switch to Posh. Torres played 24 games but was not part of new boss Gary Johnson’s plans and spent a period on loan with Lincoln City last season.

They were keen to re-sign him but a Lincoln spokesman said yesterday that they could not compete with Crawley’s financial package.

Torres trained for the first time yesterday and could be involved tomorrow when Reds entertain a full-strength Millwall side in a pre-season friendly at the Broadfield Stadium (3pm).

Torres said: “A lot of clubs were keen on me but I was impressed with what Steve Evans had to say during our meetings. I will certainly try to justify the confidence he has shown in me.”

Evans could make one more signing as he builds a squad capable of challenging for a place in the Football League, although he insists he is strengthening with a long-term plan in mind.

Evans said: “We have a lad here who, if we give him the ball in good areas of the pitch, will cause havoc and open up defences.”
