Gus Poyet is still three players short of completing the squad he wants for Albion’s League One campaign.
Poyet is keen to have a new striker and left winger in place in time for Saturday’s opener at Swindon.
He is also after a versatile defender to provide cover, although he regards that as less of a priority.
Albion had 23 players in the squad for their official photocall, including three goalkeepers and raw Argentinian recruits Agustin Battipiedi and Cristian Baz.
The line-up also incorporated rookie pair Steve Cook and Lewis Dunk, plus fellow defender Andrew Whing, whose future remains uncertain.
Poyet said: “We need three more players. With three I would be happy, less than three it will be complicated. I would prefer to have three come in at least.
“I would like to have a couple of them in this week (striker and winger).
“The other one (defender) I’m not too worried about, even though Gordon (Greer) and Dunky are not available for the start of the season.
“The idea is to try to get them as soon as possible. I am looking for someone at the back, mainly to cover the left-sided positions.
“Adam El-Abd can play anywhere along the back four, but I like him more as a centre half than a fullback.”
Dunk will be sidelined for a further four weeks by a foot injury, while Greer is suspended for the trip to his old club Swindon together with Glenn Murray.
Poyet has “three or four options” for the striker vacancy, including a permanent purchase and a loan signing.
He is continuing to look elsewhere for a winger, with Newcastle delaying a decision over the return of Kazenga LuaLua.
