GUS Poyet is unhappy with Albion’s points tally from the first three league games of the season.

The manager admits they must start turning promising performances into positive results to mount a promotion challenge.

Poyet believes his side wasted an opportunity to take something from one of the title favourites in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

It was the Seagulls’ first defeat of the season in League One following victory at Swindon and a draw against Rochdale.

Poyet told The Argus: “We’ve played two contenders for the top six away from home, beaten one of them and lost, just, to the other. We had a great game at home, played for 40 minutes with ten men and drew against a promoted team.

“It’s difficult to analyise. If you analyise it in points then, for me, it is not good enough, four points out of nine.

“In terms of performance, I think we have been better than that. I don’t remember too many games since I’ve been here where we’ve got something from the game that we didn’t deserve. Maybe Leyton Orient at home on Boxing Day last year when we got a point.

“The teams that are at the top are going to get 90 points plus, so you need two points per game. Are we going to be in the top two? That will be very difficult. We probably need four more players and that will change the situation a little bit.

“To finish in the top six we need something like 1.8 points per game. We are nearly there but we need to win games, especially when you have the chance to win. That is the main point about Saturday.

“We need to make sure when we deserve to get something from the game that we get something. That is consistency and to be at the top you need to be consistent. How? It doesn’t matter. Sheffield at the moment are more consistent that us.”

Poyet will take a further look at midfield trialist Bryan Hughes before making a decision on the 34-year-old.

He said: “He will be with us for at least another three days. He is good on the ball and he understands the game.

“He needs to improve a few things, especially in terms of fitness if you are going to get one midfielder. I don’t know if he is ready to play 90 minutes.”
