Peter Brezovan is one of the best goalkeepers in League One - even though he is stuck on the Albion bench.

That is the view of boss Gus Poyet as the big Slovakian has to settle for a place among the substitutes against Bournemouth at Withdean today (12.15pm).

Casper Ankergren has taken over as No. 1 since Brezovan fractured a wrist in pre-season training but he has not been forgotten.

Poyet said: “Remember we have got him. I would put them both in the top three or five goalkeepers in the division and one of them cannot play, so I would imagine Peter is slowly going to get upset with me! Casper knows Peter is there, so he needs to perform.”

Ankergren’s League One player of the month award for September vindicated Poyet’s gamble in throwing the Dane straight into the opening day victory at Swindon, rather than relying on summer signing Michael Poke from Southampton.

Poyet, who worked with Ankergren at Leeds, said: “When you know the player it’s very easy and I knew Casper. The risk was at Swindon. He was 70% fit but he did all right, we won the game and he started getting better and better. Now he is solid and that is what is making it difficult for Peter.”

Rochdale are the only team to have taken a point away from Withdean this season. Poyet expects third-placed Bournemouth, promoted from League Two with Dale, to be just as difficult for his table-toppers to beat.

He said: “They and Rochdale have kept their momentum. They have kept their style of play as well. They haven’t changed too much.

“Even though they lost (Brett) Pitman they have replaced him very well, because the team keeps on performing.

“It will be tough, very tough. We need to do what we have been doing, be really strong and organised, press when we have to press, keep the ball when we have to and be more clinical in front of goal.”
