Everybody was talking about it in the Albion dressing room yesterday.

Not the big visit to Charlton but the stunning goal scored by Cristian Baz in the reserves on Wednesday night.

The talented Argentinian’s spectacular strike against Brentford emphasised the rapid progress he has made since he was plucked from the obscurity of regionalised third-tier football in his own country in the summer.

Baz and Agustin Battipiedi, a team-mate at little-known Comunicaciones, were signed after a scouting mission to South America by manager Gus Poyet and his assistant Mauricio Taricco.

Midfielder Battipiedi was soon involved in the first team, making his league debut against Walsall in August.

It has taken Baz, or Chino as he is known, a little longer to come to the fore but now the versatile striker is really flourishing, so much so that he is on the brink of adding to his only previous first-team start at Northampton in the Carling Cup at the start of the season.

Poyet said: “He cannot be closer. It has been difficult to give him a chance, it has been difficult to place him on the pitch, but he’s there. Sometimes you think who is closer, Gordon (Greer) or Chino? It’s both, they are there, 11.1 not even No. 12.

“I’m pleased for him, because the way he has changed his way of playing football, the understanding he has got of the game now, the way he has adapted to English football and life here has been amazing.

“If he keeps going like that he is going to be a great asset for us in the next few months.”
