Albion are still keen to bring Kazenga LuaLua back on loan from Newcastle.

Boss Gus Poyet is determined to land the flying winger for the promotion run-in, despite being told by the Toon that LuaLua could be in first team contention at St James Park.

LuaLua broke his right fibula in November during the Seagulls’ 3-1 defeat away to Saturday’s visitors Hartlepool. Albion have stayed on top of League One without him but Poyet would love to reclaim the burning pace and game-changing attributes of LuaLua, who remains on course for a March comeback.

Poyet told The Argus: “We still want Kazenga here and we are going to try to get him because he gives us something totally different. When you think about Kazenga and the game at Bristol Rovers the other day in the last 25 minutes, I can only imagine the quantity of chances we would have created.

“He is unique and important for us but I think the squad have coped with the situation very well.

“We are having contact all the time with Kazenga. He has started running already but it is going to be complicated. At the moment at least we have been told he is going to be considered for the first team, so we'll see.

“If he is jogging already it means he needs to start accelerating and then doing strength work. It will be five weeks maybe. We don't want to do things too early because, if the player doesn't get fit before the window closes for loans, it's not worth it but we will move at the right time.”

The loan window opened on Tuesday and does not close until March 24. Fringe players in Poyet's squad have already attracted plenty of attention.

He said: “Everybody is calling me to get my players but at the moment no-one is moving.”

Poyet has not ruled out other long-term loan signings to accompany LuaLua, depending on circumstances.

He added: “We are not looking for a specific position but we would be interested if someone very special is available and we have to be careful about injuries an suspensions.

“We are ready, it's a non-stop job. You are always talking to people but we will not borrow a player for a month unless something crazy happens like two goalkeepers getting injured. In normal circumstances it will only be for the rest of the season.”
