Eastbourne boss Trevor Geer has revealed why his side’s young Swedish star is all set up to shine at Arlington.

Simon Gustafsson opened the Elite League season in stunning style with five wins out of five as Eagles hammered highly-rated Wolverhampton 57-38 last week.

Fans will hope for something similar when Belle Vue Aces, led by Great Britain racer Chris Harris, come to the East Sussex circuit tomorrow (7.30pm).

Gustafsson has shown plenty of glimpses of his talent in his three previous seasons in the Elite League, albeit lacking consistency at times, and went close to a maximum against Lakeside last summer.

Now Geer has backed him to build on his first Elite League full house, helped by his impeccable pedigree.

Gustafsson is son of star rider Henka Gustafsson, who is still doing his bit on the Swedish circuits and has been a massive influence.

He is riding machinery previously used by former Eagles skipper Dean Barker, himself a technically classy rider.

And his mechanic Colin Davies previously worked for the Master of Arlington himself, Martin Dugard.

Gustafsson has always been a smooth performer but hit new heights in his four programmed races, plus an all-star heat 15, against Wolves.

Geer said: “Simon is looking fantastic. I said to him if he rode like that in one of the old one-off World Finals he would have beaten everybody.

“He just felt it was all coming so easily to him. You get nights like that.

“We know he has great potential. He was gating, he didn’t make many mistakes and he looked quick.”
