Crawley are just six points from a place in the Football League after a 1-0 win over Darlington at the Broadfield Stadium today.

Midfielder Ben Smith broke the deadlock midway through the second half with a fiercely-struck shot from 20 yards that went in off the left-hand post.

With Luton dropping points in a 3-3 draw at Kidderminster, Reds could even go up on Tuesday if they beat York City and Luton lose at home to Kettering.

Darlington's team of 6ft-plus players made it difficult for Reds but the home side kept plugging away and deserved their win in front of a crowd of 3,554.

Smith nearly opened the scoring in the fourth minute when his header was held at full stretch by keeper Sam Russell.

Matt Tubbs and Charlie Wassmer were also denied by Russell and after Smith broke the deadlock Tubbs was denied when his angled drive struck the post.

Reds saw the game out comfortably enough although Scott Shearer had to make a smart reflex save to deny Liam Hatch with Greg Taylor firing the rebound over the bar.

Assistant manager Paul Raynor said: "We knew Darlington would make it difficult, they are a well-organised side.

"We just needed a bit of magic to break them down and Ben Smith gave us that and I thought we saw the game out pretty comfortably."
