Charlie Wassmer admits he is surprised at how much of a part he has played in Crawley’s push for the Football League.

The 21-year-old continues to deputise for Pablo Mills, who is out for another two weeks with a twisted ankle, when Reds go to Tamworth today looking for the victory that would guarantee promotion as Conference champions.

Six weeks ago Wassmer was fighting a relegation battle with Hayes and Yeading before joining Crawley on loan until the end of the season, when the deal will be made permanent.

He said: “When I came to the club I knew I would play a part but perhaps not as much as I have. We have three other quality centre-halves here and I have huge respect for them. I just want to keep playing my football and enjoy every game I play.

“I am learning so much and hopefully I will keep doing that and keep progressing. Pablo has played at a much higher level and I have learned bundles in the two games I have played with him and the same goes with Kyle, since Pablo got injured.”

Wassmer admits Hayes’ result is the first he looks for but he is delighted at the progress he has made at the Broadfield.

He added: “It is crazy how football changes. I was at the bottom of the league with Hayes and I hope they stay up but I think coming to Crawley is the right decision. I set my standards high and want to keep improving.

“Hayes were full-time like we are but I think I have improved more since I came here. It is the same level but I’m with better players and feel sharper and fitter.

“I have played less than 30 games at this level so I need more to gain experience but I keep learning from Pablo and Kyle, Steve Evans and Paul, Raynor.

“They are always telling me things which can make me better and it is working. I feel my form is good and we’re winning and keeping clean sheets. Long may it continue and hopefully we can get promoted.”

Reds need three points from their last six games to clinch the title and will have the backing of more than 500 fans at The Lamb today.

Boss Evans said: “Our supporters are travelling in big numbers and they can play a massive part. They have been brilliant this season. The players have given us all some very special moments but a win today would be the ultimate high of all - promotion to The Football League.
