STEVE EVANS praised his ‘special group’ of players after Reds broke two Conference records thanks to a howitzer from defender Dean Howell in the 1-0 win at Newport.

Crawley have now established new Conference records for the most points (104) and longest unbeaten run after Howell struck from 25 yards midway through the second half to make it 29 matches since their last league defeat.

That was against County back in mid-October but Newport rarely threatened a double even before Howell took a crossfield pass from Richard Brodie in his path and hit a left-foot drive into the top corner.

Evans said: “My players have set the highest possible standards all season and although we won the title with five matches to go they have not allowed them to drop."
