Jake Forster-Caskey has been told he will return to Albion a better player after his World Cup adventure in Mexico.

Seagulls boss Gus Poyet has urged the midfielder to enjoy the experience – and taken a swipe at managers who withdraw their players from international tournaments.

Forster-Caskey set up the first goal in a 2-0 win over Uruguay which took England under-17s into the last 16 of their age group World Cup.

He will still be away as Albion start pre-season training this week but has been assured that will not hinder his domestic season.

Poyet said: “It is fantastic experience. He is playing against the best young players in the world.

“He will be a different player when he comes back and we will look after him.

“We will give him the time off to rest which he deserves.

“But he’s 17. He should be playing all the time.

“We look after our young kids too much. You hear people saying young players will be tired. But these boys are 17 so let them go out there and run about.”

England face Argentina on Thursday in the first knockout stage and Poyet is keeping an eye on their progress.

He said: “The games haven’t been the best but I like what Jake is doing.

“He is playing international football and I like the way he cares about the ball. He has been doing very well.

“I would never ask a player not to play for his national team.

“I know other managers disagree.

“But you want a good national team in England. When you lose it’s the fault of the foreigners.

“People say there are too many foreigners coming into the English game.

“Then, when you get a European Championship or another tournament, you don’t let the players go there and get experience.

“How can you explain that?”
