Albion manager Gus Poyet has cast doubt over whether Darren Carter is the midfielder he is looking for.
A decision is looming on the former Preston man, who has been on trial with the Seagulls and scored in the reserves on Tuesday.
Poyet told The Argus: "He's got plenty of things I like. He is not exactly the type of player we are looking for.
"I'm looking for power, presence, athleticisim in terms of helping Liam Bridcutt cover the pitch in the middle. We don't have that type of player.
"We've got more ball players and when they are at their best we are a very good team. When they are not we look weak, so we need to compensate for that with someone in there.
"I don't think Darren's characteristics are those ones, so it's a decision, not bring someone just because you like him. I like 150 players."
