ALBION boss Gus Poyet has told fans to forget about another big money signing during the January transfer window.

Poyet is still keen to add to his squad but says there is “no chance” of the Seagulls doing business on a similar scale to Craig Mackail-Smith’s £2.5 million move from Peterborough in the summer.

Albion want a midfielder, striker and another full-back. Former loan signing Gonzalo Jara Reyes and ex-trialists Habib Habibou and Danny Lafferty are among the players they are interested in.

The prospect of having several of the squad back from injury and suspension in January has made no difference to Poyet’s desire to strengthen in certain areas.

He told The Argus: “We knew maybe a month or two ago what we needed and it’s still needed, independent of whether everybody is fit or not.

“We are trying. The players I really, really like we cannot afford, so I’m looking for players that I like and maybe we’ve got a chance (of getting).

“There are not many. The way I like to work is to get a specific player, not just a body.”

Poyet is also prepared for highly rated centre-half Lewis Dunk attracting a bid after Norwich launched their eventually successful pursuit of Elliott Bennett during the last January window.

“I try to wait, because it’s not worth thinking about it unless something happens and the offer comes,” Poyet said. “You need to be ready for that and expect at any time any player can go.

“We’ve got players with quality. Dunky is one of them, so it can happen. There are teams in the Championship who I think in January are going to push hard for the Premier League.

“They have got two options, go and get Premier League players or the best ones from this division.

“If that is one from Brighton we’ll see. We know the chairman doesn’t want to sell but, as we always say, everyone has got a price.”
