Albion manager Dean Wilkins hailed a shock win over ten-man Scunthorpe as a "massive result".

The Seagulls ended a run of five straight defeats with goals by Dean Cox and Gary Hart after an early red card for Scunthorpe defender Steve Foster for leading with his arm in a challenge with Sam Williams.

Wilkins said "It doesn't matter which club it is, if you are on a run of defeats it's a massive result to get your next win.

"It was very important to stop the rot. I think everyone realises it could be a topsy-turvy type season in terms of results.

"We have to try to make sure we put a consistent run together now."

Hart's second-half match-winner came after he was dropped to the bench for the first time under Wilkins for last Sunday's 3-0 home defeat by Blackpool and then played in the reserves on Tuesday.

Wilkins said "That is what you have a squad for. You make what you think is going to be the right decision at the right time.

"I still think it was warranted to leave him out last week and it was warranted to bring him back.

"That is the response you expect every time somebody faces a disappointment.

"We had to dig in when we were 2-1 up and we could have made it easier for ourselves by keeping the ball better but you could have no complaints about our response and the way they competed for balls into our box and scrambled and scrapped for things.

"We were well worthy of the win."

Captain Richard Carpenter was ruled out by a torn groin muscle and he will miss Tuesday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie at home to Boston United.
