Kyle McFadzean says he has no regrets about turning down a move to the Championship as he prepares for his 100th game for Crawley.

The defender had an opportunity to join Peterborough in the summer but instead opted to sign a new three-year deal to stay at Broadfield Stadium .

Peterborough had previously had a joint £1.4million bid for McFadzean and striker Tyrone Barnett rejected in January but returned with a new offer for the former England non-league international at the end of last season.

McFadzean admits it was a big decision but believes it was the right one with Peterborough struggling at the foot of the Championship and Reds fourth in League One ahead of their clash with leaders Tranmere Rovers today.

He said: “I could have gone to Peterborough but at this point in my career I think I can do better than that. Looking at the table now we are only five places below them so that says a lot.

“I think Crawley have more potential than Peterborough anyway. We could end up getting promoted this season and they might get relegated so I’m glad I stayed.

“I still want to play at the highest level I can but I wouldn’t just go to any Championship team. I would only consider a top Championship team who were really going to challenge for promotion.”

McFadzean had initially turned down a new deal at Crawley in the summer and stated his intention to run down the last year of his contract.

The 25-year-old was persuaded to change his mind by new boss Richie Barker and believes his form has benefitted from sorting out his future.

McFadzean added: “I wanted to come into the season with a fresh mind and not worrying about other stuff. At the end of last season I was worrying about things and when you are doing that you can’t really play your best football.

“Now I haven’t got any worries so hopefully I can keep playing as well as I can and get promoted with Crawley because I am as happy as I have been in a few years.

“It doesn’t mean somebody won’t come in and buy me at the end of the day but unless a club comes in with an offer Crawley can’t turn down and is right for me then I’m going nowhere.”

McFadzean will bring up his century of appearances for Reds today as they bid to end Tranmere’s unbeaten start to the season in League One.

“It means a lot to me to play 100 games for Crawley but it will be a bit of an anti-climax if we don’t win,” said McFadzean.

“It’s a massive game and if we can come out on top we’ll only be a point behind them. I don’t think this league is as strong as it was last year so we’ve got a good chance of creating history.

“From what I can tell no team has gone up three years in a row so that would be a really big thing to achieve. We’ve made a good start but today’s game will be one of our biggest tests so far.”
