Chris Jordan made an instant impact on his England debut – but could not prevent Australia winning the one-day series at the Rose Bowl last night.

The Sussex seamer took a wicket with only his seventh ball in international cricket after finally being picked by England for the deciding match in the series.

Jordan added the wickets of Michael Clarke and James Faulkner to that of Phil Hughes to finish with figures of 3-51 from his ten overs. Only Boyd Rankin was more economical (1-26) while Ben Stokes picked up 5-61 as Australia were bowled out for 298 in the final over with Shane Watson making 143.

England’s hopes of chasing down that total were dented as they slumped to 68-4 as Kevin Pietersen and Sussex’s Luke Wright – also making his first appearance of the series as a late replacement for the injured Jonathan Trott – were both run out for ducks.

Ravi Bopara (62) and Jos Buttler (42) put on 92 for the sixth wicket to give England hope but when they both departed in the space of seven balls the home side slid to 249 all out with two overs to go, Jordan making 14 off 25 balls.

Jordan’s inclusion in the team was significant for Sussex as it means he cannot now represent West Indies – who he also qualifies to play for having been born in Barbados – and therefore removes the possibility of the all-rounder becoming classed as an overseas player.
