A moment of brilliance from Chris Jordan could not save England from another demoralising defeat in Australia today.
England looked set to record their first victory of what has been a miserable tour Down Under in the second one-day international in Brisbane only for a brutal late assault from James Faulkner to break their hearts.
Eoin Morgan had scored a superb 106 from 99 balls to help England to a total of 300-8 at the Gabba and when Jordan took two early wickets a comfortable victory appeared on the cards.
The Sussex bowler removed openers Aaron Finch and David Warner inside the first six overs – both via unlikely one-handed catches.
Gary Ballance plucked a fierce Finch drive out of the sky with his right hand to make some amends for his costly drop in Melbourne when the opener went on to score a match-winning century.
Jordan - who finished with figures of 2-53 - then took an even better return catch to get rid of the dangerous Warner, sticking out a hand to grab a ball that seemed destined to whiz by him.
But from 120-5 Australia mounted an unlikely comeback inspired by a sensational innings by Faulkner. He smashed 69 from 47 balls to guide the Aussies to victory with three balls and one wicket to spare.
