Tymal Mills claimed two late wickets to keep Sussex well on top after day two of their Championship clash with Hampshire.
Ajmal Shahzad and Matt Hobden blew away Hampshire top order in the afternoon session to leave the hosts reeling on 63-5 at tea in reply to Sussex’s first innings total of 444.
Steve Magoffin then picked up the wickets of James Vince and Gareth Berg in the space of four balls to reduce Hampshire to 95-7 and raise the prospect of them following on.
Sean Ervine and Chris Wood mounted a fine fight-back as they put on 109 from 116 balls as Hampshire battled to avoid the follow on.
Ervine reached his 50 from 69 balls and the pair looked set to see Hampshire through to the close until Sussex skipper Ed Joyce brought Mills back into the attack.
The former Essex man dismissed Wood for 48 with his third ball and then removed Danny Briggs for four in the final over of the day as Hampshire closed on 220-9, still trailing by 224.
Earlier, Ben Brown made an unbeaten 144 to help Sussex take their overnight score from 300-6 to 444 all out. Shahzad gave him good support with 35 while Steve Magoffin added 41.
