Debutant Mahela Jayawardene did not find it plain sailing for Sussex yesterday.
The Sri Lanka batsman was part of a Sharks team which overcame blustery conditions at Hove to beat a Sussex League XI by six wickets ahead of the start of the NatWest T20 Blast next week.
Jayawardene made just 15 before he was caught behind off the bowling of former Derbyshire spinner Peter Burgoyne as Sussex chased down the League XI's total of 148-7 with seven balls to spare.
The 37-year-old was upstaged by Jake Lehmann, the son of Australia coach Darren, who top scored with 46 for the League XI while Ajmal Shahzad continued his good form for Sussex this season by taking 4-36.
Jayawardene, whose last taste of action came in the World Cup semi-final in Australia in March, is set to make his competitive debut for Sussex in the opening match of the T20 Blast against Kent at Canterbury next Friday.
