Sussex defeated Glamorgan by six wickets in their 50 overs friendly at Hove yesterday.

Glamorgan, fortified by an unbeaten 93 from England under-19 batsman Ben Wright, made 218-5.

But Mike Yardy, who captained the side, led Sussex to victory with 58 as his side reached their target with 7.5 overs to spare.

Earlier, Yardy had employed his bowling resources carefully on a slow pitch.

He used seven of his bowlers including three spinners but it was Carl Hopkinson, who took 2-15 from six overs, who was the most successful member of the attack.

He removed Richard Grant and Robert Croft after James Kirtley had made the breakthrough with the new ball when he had Nicky Peng caught in the deep.

There was also a wicket for Saqlain Mushtaq who bowled six overs and took 1-17, trapping David Hemp leg before.

From 87-4, Wright led the recovery by adding 79 with Dan Cherry (32) and 52 with Mark Wallace (17 not out).

Hopkinson got the reply off to a brisk start, putting on 32 with Richard Montgomerie before he was caught behind in the seventh over off Grant.

Matt Prior briefly flourished, hitting three off-side boundaries in one over from Huw Waters before holing out to long on. Montgomerie made a composed 55 and Chris Adams 16 before Chris Nash, who helped Yardy add 72, eased Sussex to victory with an unbeaten 38.

Sussex continue their pre-season preparations with two 50 overs matches against Northants at Hove, starting today (10.45am).

The only player not expected to figure is fast bowler Jason Lewry, who is still recovering from a virus.
