Sussex skipper Chris Adams today warned his side have to "raise their game" after they suffered another embarrassing defeat.

The champions have now suffered back-to-back innings defeats for the first time since 1997 after losing in five sessions to Kent.

They were bowled out by Kent for 102 - their lowest total for four year - and then 160 after following on to lose by an innings and 106 runs.

Adams said: "The facts are we need to raise our game.

"I felt we were back on track against Somerset on Sunday when the fight and competitive spirit was there. I thought that would kick-start our season.

"I won't make excuses - we have been outplayed in all departments and helped them with some lacklustre batting yesterday."

Sussex have now lost two games out of three, the same number of defeats they suffered throughout their two title-winning campaigns.

Adams added: "After last season we are not used to losing and producing performances like this one. But I'm very confident that there is enough character in the squad to bounce back."

Rana Naved (stomach strain) is out for ten days while Jason Lewry (lower back) is looking at a longer lay-off after both were forced out of the attack on the first day.
