Sussex are likely to take another look at bowler Imran Arif after he impressed in the rain-ruined friendly against Cardiff UCCE.

In two spells yesterday Arif took 4-11 from 8.4 overs before the game was abandoned because of rain and bad light.

Arif has already played in one second-team game this season against Durham, when he took two wickets.

Last season he was second-highest wicket-taker in the Bradford League with 57 wickets for Saltaire.

Only 17.4 overs were possible yesterday in two sessions after Wednesday's second day had been washed out.

After Sussex declared on their overnight 225-4, Arif struck with successive balls as he pushed it through in a lively spell down the slope.

He exposed some flimsy technique against quick bowling among the students' batsmen to remove Rhidian Harries and Simon Butler.

Chris Liddle took the other wicket before rain forced the players off after just eight overs with Cardiff UCCE 7-3.

After a two-hour delay, play resumed at 2pm with the students declaring their first innings and Sussex forfeiting their second to set a target of 219.

Arif soon struck again when opener Carwyn James, who has been coached by former Glamorgan stalwart Steve James, tried to take evasive action when Arif dropped short and could only lob up a gentle catch to the gully off the splice.

Chris Smith was caught behind in Arif's next over but the students were saved from further strife when the clouds closed in again.
