Shane Warne believes England will make a mistake if they hand Sussex's Matt Prior a Test debut next week.

The 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman is battling with Paul Nixon to face the West Indies in the first Test at Lord's on Thursday.

But Hampshire skipper Warne, who had an on-field bust-up with Prior two years ago, does not believe he is up to Test standard.

Warne said: "The whispers I've heard are that Matt Prior is going to get the nod but he has hardly scored a run this season.

"More important, I don't think his glovework is up to Test standard. It could cost England if he drops a couple of crucial players."

Former Sussex coach Peter Moores, who has worked with Prior since he was 12-years-old, names his first squad since taking over as England coach on Sunday morning.

Warne thinks Hampshire team-mate Nic Pothas would do a better job than either Prior or Nixon.

He added: "I'm not biased but I think Nic Pothas should be picked. He can bat at No. 6, he's a decent keeper and a tough cricketer.

"Paul Nixon also brings a lot to the table, but he'd have to bat lower. If England want Andrew Flintoff to bat at No. 7 then Pothas is their man."

Warne and Prior clashed during a Championship game at Hove in April 2005.

Sussex captain Chris Adams accused Warne of "publicly humiliating" Prior after the Australian leg spinner got him out in both innings.

Warne admitted he had tried to intimidate Prior and accused him of "chesting" Hampshire team-mate Simon Katich.

He said: "I thought cricket was a non-contact sport. I was sticking up for my mate and letting him know what I thought about his behaviour."

Meanwhile, former England wicketkeeper Jack Russell says that whoever gets the nod from Moores should be given an extensive run in the England side.

He said: "It is frustrating because we have the best wicketkeepers in the world, there's no doubt about that.

"Whoever it is that they go for - Prior, Nixon or (James) Foster - they have to give them the best chance and that means giving them time.

"And whoever gets the job should get it with an eye on the next Ashes series and the World Cup in four years time.

"The only way to build a successful side is to give them backing and stability.

"Nicco is very fit and won't let you down. He can add a lot to a team, on and off the field. But Matt's a very fine, aggressive batsman and his keeping has improved. Maybe Moores will go down that road."

The squad is due to be announced at 9.30am on Sunday.
