Chris Adams believes his Sussex side "need to find another 20 per cent" to keep their Championship challenge alive.

The champions are fourth after drawing with last season's runners-up Lancashire on Saturday.

They have two games to go before the mid-season break against Hampshire at Arundel on Wednesday followed by a trip to Headingley to face leaders Yorkshire.

Adams said: "I think we're in pretty good shape at the moment but we can probably find another 20 per cent with bat and ball.

"Batting-wise we need to convert the 40s and 50s into bigger scores and with the ball we need to be a bit more ruthless. The strength of this side is that we keep proding away at the opposition and we have to keep doing that."

Adams expects Sussex to get better in the second half of the season when dry pitches tend to suit their bowling attack but he recognises the need not to lose either of the two matches before Twenty20 action to keep in touch with the leaders.

He added: "We have two massive games coming up and if we can come out of those at worst with good draws we are in touching distance and our destiny is in our hands. If we play good cricket I am convinced we will be up there in the shake-up.

"The biggest danger at this time of the season is ending up in a position like Surrey and Worcestershire find themselves in where you are already in a dogfight trying to stay up.

"You want to be within touching distance with four games to go and we have a history of coming good in the second half of the season."
