Seventeen wickets tumbled on day one at the 1st Central County Ground, where Sussex bowled out Leicestershire for 135 before struggling to 182-7.
Steve Magoffin (5-50) and Jofra Archer (4-31) were Leicestershire's chief tormentors as Neil Dexter top-scored for the home side with 52.
Sussex - for whom Chris Nash posted 65 - then reached 82 without loss, only to suffer a subsequent collapse to which Dexter (5-41) was key.
