Ross Taylor believes Sussex can make an impact in the NatWest T20 Blast this summer.

The New Zealand batsman was confirmed as Sussex’s overseas signing for the competition today, as revealed in The Argus last Thursday.

Sussex’s solitary Twenty20 success came eight years ago while they have failed to progress to the knockout stages three times in the last four seasons.

Taylor was Sussex’s leading run scorer in the Blast last summer and is hoping to build on that individual success while helping the Sharks get through the notoriously difficult South Group and reach finals day for the first time since 2012.

The 32-year-old said: “I am delighted to be returning to Sussex. I really enjoyed my time on the south coast last season and hope we can really make an impact in the Blast this coming campaign.

“The squad is looking very strong with a great balance of experience and exciting young talent.”

Taylor made 394 runs at an average of 56.28 in Twenty20 cricket for Sussex last season with his top score of 93 not out helping the Sharks secure victory over Gloucestershire at Bristol.

He is expected to be Sussex’s only overseas player for the Blast with budget limits likely to prevent a second signing.

Head coach Mark Davis said: “We are thrilled to have Ross joining us again. He was outstanding in the competition last season and to have him back is brilliant for the club.

“Not only is Ross a world class batsman but a fantastic role model to our younger players.”
