TWENTY20 star Laurie Evans could be handed the chance he craves to star against the red ball.

Evans has been called into a 13-man Sussex squad to face Durham at the Emirates Riverside in Specsavers County Championship action from today (11am).

Both he and Delray Rawlins come into contention after the county lost two batsmen in Harry Finch, to a hand injury, and Luke Wright, to retirement from first-class cricket.

Danny Briggs also drops out of the group as Sussex aim to improve on the costly 186-run hammering they took in the North East to severely dent promotion hopes last season.

Evans was keen for a chance in the Championship last season after excelling in shorter formats of the game.

That opportunity came in the final Championship game of the season, when he scored 34 and nought going in at No.3 at Northants.

Sussex coach Jason Gillespie said: “We’ve decided to give ourselves the option of an extra batsman for this fixture.

“We’ll look at the surface when we arrive in the North East and decide on the balance of our final eleven based on that.”
