David Wiese hit one of the great one-day innings for Sussex – but his county threw away a famous win.
They lost their last five wickets for 11 runs to go down by nine runs to Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl in the Royal London One-Day Cup.
That was so tough on Wiese, who hit nine sixes in a magnificent 126-ball knock of 171 to revive a Sussex side who looked beaten.
He shared a sixth-wicket stand of 232 with Ben Brown, who made 64.
That put Sussex within sight of victory until Brown’s departure with a reverse sweep to point sparked a late collapse.
Mason Crane, the spinner from Worthing who enjoys playing against Sussex, applied the brakes at a key time, as well as taking the catch in the deep to remove Wiese.
Hampshire set 355-5 in their 50 overs, of which Aiden Markram hit 130 and Tom Alsop 124.
Sussex were 103-5 in reply and still have work to do if they are to reach the knockout stage.
