Phil Salt faces a race against time to make Sussex’s next Championship match.

The opener had an operation today after suffering a hand injury in the innings win over Middlesex.

Salt split the webbing of his left thumb while fielding yesterday.

Sussex will judge the full extent of the injury and likely timescale for his return after surgery has been carried out.

The county face Gloucestershire in division two of the Specsavers County Championship at Arundel from Tuesday.

Head coach Jason Gillespie allowed the players some time off after securing success at Lord’s in the final hour.

They are due to practise for two days at the Castle Ground ahead of the Gloucestershire clash while the 1st Central County Ground hosts an Elton John concert.
