JASON GILLESPIE says Sussex’s new fast-bowling all-rounder has got “something about him”.

Aaron Thomason is on board after parting company with his first club Warwickshire.

The 21-year-old goes straight into a 13-man squad to face Worcestershire in Championship action at Kidderminster today.

Sussex star Jofra Archer is with England, who face Afghanistan in the World Cup today, while Mir Hamza, George Garton and loan signing Jared Warner have been ruled out by injury.

Head coach Gillespie said: “Aaron became available and he is someone we have had in mind for a while.

“We are delighted to get this opportunity.

“He has got something about him.

“We like his attributes and we think we can help him become a better player.

“He bowls briskly. He bustles in. And he gives the ball a whack with the bat.”

Thomason has yet to play in the Championship but Gillespie believes that is down to the wealth of talent at his previous club.

He said: “Aaron has had some opportunity but, with the depth at Warwickshire, he has not been able to get a regular spot in their team. He is young and raw.”

Hamza is still out with back stiffness while opening bat Phil Salt has a hand injury.

Gillespie said: “The hand is mending well. We will have to wait and see.”
