Luke Wright would be happy to open the batting for England in next month's one-day series against New Zealand.

The Sussex all-rounder is in a 14-man squad for five ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals which start on June 13.

With Sussex team-mate Matt Prior and Phil Mustard, who opened against the Kiwis earlier this year, both left out there is no obvious partner for Alistair Cook.

Wright has batted at No. 7 in four of his previous five ODI appearances and on the only occasion he opened, against India at Lord's last September, he got a second-ball duck.

But the 23-year-old made his reputation with some explosive performances at the top of the order for Sussex last year and would love the chance to do the same for his country.

He said: "You never know what options the selectors were going to go with so I was a bit worried this week but I got a call from (selector) Geoff Miller on Wednesday with the good news.

"Obviously I will bat anywhere they ask me but hopefully with Mustard not picked I might get a chance at the top of the order.

"To get given an opening spot would be a huge boost but even batting at No. 7, where I have been in the past, is fine. But I would love another chance to open."
