Monty Panesar has put his England ambitions on hold to concentrate on helping Sussex make a quick return to the County Championship’s top flight.

The 28-year-old, whose last appearance for his country came when he helped save the dramatic first Ashes Test last June, was left out of England’s 30-man performance squad last month.

Players can be added to the squad during the season but Monty admits it is not among his priorities as Sussex prepare to face Middlesex at Hove today (11am).

He said: “At the moment all I’m looking to do is enjoy my cricket at Sussex.

“What is important for me this season is re-connecting with my bowling and with enjoying the game. I’m not really thinking about too much else including England.”
