Matt Prior insists performing for Sussex rather than impressing the England captain was his priority during his unbeaten hundred against Middlesex yesterday.

Prior made 123 not out, more than half of his side’s runs, in front of Andrew Strauss and England selector James Whitaker, his first first-class century at Hove for nearly two years.

He then caught Strauss for 13 and Middlesex will resume today on 46-3 in reply to Sussex’s 217.

Prior said: “Straussy is an opponent but also an England team-mate and you want to play well in front of him but first and foremost I wanted to play well for Sussex. I’m passionate about performing for Sussex at the moment, the rest can take care of itself.”

None of the other Sussex batsmen got past 17.
