Luke Wells is targeting a regular first-team place next season after extending his Sussex contract.
Wells, who made 62 on his Championship debut against Worcestershire last month, has signed a one-year extension which will keep him at Hove until 2013.
The 19-year-old is playing club cricket in Cape Town this winter and is delighted at Sussex’s show of faith.
He said: “I’m thrilled with the contract extension. (Coaches) Mark Robinson and Mark Davis have shown a lot of confidence in me so I am keen to repay them next season.”
As well as his batting, Wells is keen to develop his off spin after working with Peter Such, one of England’s Spin coaches, when playing for England under-19s this summer.
Davis said: “Luke is an excellent prospect for the future. We have a lot of faith in him as he is potentially a very good cricketer.
“He gained great experience with England under-19s and although the results weren’t outstanding he showed in the second XI and in the game he had at Worcester that he can go on and have a long and prosperous career with Sussex.”
