Ed Joyce and Chris Nash mounted a superb rearguard action to boost Sussex's hopes of salvaging a draw from their County Championship clash with Lancashire.
Sussex were forced to follow on after being dismissed for 290 in pursuit of Lancashire's massive total of 590 despite a century for Murray Goodwin.
Nash (57no) and Joyce (63no) both made half centuries after tea in an unbroken opening stand of 147 to leave Sussex still 154 behind going into the final day.
Earlier, Lancashire had sniffed the chance of wrapping up the match quickly.
Nightwatchman Amjad Khan fell in the third over of the day but partnerships of 81 between Goodwin and Luke Wright and 90 between Andrew Hodd and Goodwin frustrated them.
Once Hodd had gone for 28 - one of four wickets for Glenn Chapple - Sussex lost their last four wickets for just 19 runs, including Goodwin for 113.
