Two of the successful Lewes under-18s side are joining Southampton on trial.

Midfielder David Wheeler, who has already broken into the Rooks first team, and winger Ryan Storrie will team up with the Saints in the new year.

Both were part of the Lewes team which gave Premier League side Hull City a scare before losing 2-1 in the third round of the FA Youth Cup on Monday.

Ipswich have also expressed an interest in Wheeler while Fulham were among a number of scouts keeping tabs on him against Hull.

Watford, meanwhile, have advised Lewes of their interest in another member of the under-18 side.

Six of the FA Youth Cup side – Wheeler, Tim Rivers, Fred Foreman, Grant Hall, Matt Whitehead and captain Ryan Timms – have already appeared for the first team and a number are expected to be involved in the FA Trophy match at Team Bath tomorrow.

Wheeler is not on contract with Lewes because he is in full-time education and, while Lewes would not want to lose a player they have nurtured since he was released as a schoolboy by Albion, it is unlikely they would stand in his way if his trial at Southampton was successful.
