Nick Greenwood has urged Eastbourne Borough supporters to turn out in force to celebrate what he believes is the club’s greatest ever achievement.

Borough have almost certainly guaranteed their Blue Square premier status for a second season after victory at Kettering last Saturday was followed by a draw at home to Salisbury on Tuesday to take them to the magical 50 point mark.

Assistant boss Greenwood says securing their safety with ten games to go eclipses all the other success he and Garry Wilson have delivered since taking over at Priory Lane ten years ago.

That is quite a claim considering Borough have enjoyed four promotions, a Sussex Senior Cup triumph and a place in the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history in the last decade.

Greenwood said: “Without a doubt what we have done this season is our best achievement.

“We’ve had a lot of success but this is more satisfying because the odds were stacked against us and the prize was so great.

“Getting promoted last year was fantastic but staying in this division is much harder because it is such a big step up. Every week we are playing against big clubs, with full-time players and fantastic facilities but we have more than held our own.

“I am so proud of all our players and everyone involved in the club because they have put so much hard work in to make sure we are in this division next year.

“It would be nice if a big crowd turned out tomorrow to recognise what we have achieved because the players deserve that.”

Safety looked anything but a formality when Borough lost 2-0 at tomorrow’s visitors, Burton Albion, back in November.

Just two wins in 13 games had seen them slip precariously towards the relegation zone before a remarkable turnaround ensured their survival with plenty to spare.

Success on the pitch has been matched by an increase in attendances with crowds up by 57% this season to an average of 1,367.

However, only 1,047 fans turned out for the goalless draw with Salisbury on Tuesday – the second lowest crowd of the season – prompting Greenwood to call for a big turnout tomorrow.

Despite being safe he insists Borough have still got plenty to play for with the visit of leaders Burton tomorrow one of a series of big games coming up at Priory Lane.

He added: “The last few years we have had something to fight for until the last game of the season and so the fans are not used to us being in mid-table. What they should realise is that being in mid-table in this division is a great achievement.

“Whatever out situation it is still a massive game tomorrow as we are playing the leaders. Even though we are pretty confident we are safe now we can still have a big bearing on what happens at the top and the bottom of the table so we owe it to the rest of the clubs to keep trying our hardest.

“We’ve also got the likes of Cambridge and Crawley to come who are chasing promotion while Grays, Weymouth and Barrow are fighting to avoid relegation.”

Andy Atkin is Borough’s only injury worry for tomorrow’s game after complaining of a tight groin following the game against Salisbury.
