Chairman Len Smith has dismissed calls to sack manager Garry Wilson and instead backed him to steer Eastbourne Borough away from danger.

Wilson has come under increasing pressure in the aftermath of the 2-0 home defeat by Crawley Town which stretched Borough’s winless run to 14 league games.

The Priory Lane outfit are now just a point above the Blue Square premier relegation zone prompting some supporters to demand Wilson’s ten-year reign be brought to an end.

A handful of fans have emailed Smith directly to argue their point while others are planning a demonstration at the next home game to highlight their dissatisfaction with the current regime.

Smith, who appointed Wilson in 1989, said:“I am fully behind Garry and Nick (Greenwood, assistant manager). They have got us all this way and I am content that they are still the right men for the job.

“I’m not going to panic. We’ve had blips like this before where people have been shouting for heads to roll and I have ignored them before.

“If I had listened to some fans I would have sacked Garry in his first month in charge when we hardly won a game and look what he has gone on to achieve since.

“Some of these fans have short memories because after the previous home game against Cambridge they were clapping the team off. It is ridiculous that it only takes one poor performance and they are calling for the manager to be sacked.

“Obviously I am concerned with the position we are in but I am still confident we will stay up as long as we give Garry and Nick our full backing.”
