Crawley caretaker boss John Yems called his players "embarrassing" after their shock 3-2 Sussex Senior Cup defeat at Bognor.

Reds were knocked out of the third round after extra time at Nyewood Lane, having twice taken the lead.

Yems said "Some of those players are playing for their futures and their jobs and they will not be at the club for much longer if they play like that.

"It was embarrassing and I feel sorry for the supporters, the owners and the whole club."

One of the few plusses for Reds was a goalscoring debut for new striker Marcus Richardson.

The 29-year old target man, signed from Cambridge United yesterday, has played almost 200 League games for nine different clubs, including Lincoln, Hartlepool and Chester.

He started the season at Weymouth but failed to settle and switched to Cambridge in August.

Richardson has scored three times in 20 appearances for Cambridge this season and played against Crawley when the Reds won 2-1 at Abbey Stadium earlier in the season.

He is the fourth player Crawley have signed in a week following the arrivals of Magnus Okuonghae, Ronnie Bull and Steve Evans.

Joint caretaker manager Ben Judge said "He has not played for three weeks so he is short of match fitness but I thought he did well.

"He held the ball up, he got a goal and he will be a handful for defenders."

Rocks boss Jack Pearce said "I am absolutely delighted for the boys. Considering we had four or five key players out we did very well and thoroughly deserved it."

Unfamiliar Richardson was one of four unfamiliar faces in the Reds' line-up last night as the management team used the game to run the rule over a hat-trick of trialists.

Sean Ridgway, who joined from Aldershot, started in midfield, alongside former Brentford winger Ryan Watts and ex-Lincoln playmaker Kevin George.

Yems said "The phone has not stopped ringing with people wanting to come to us and we are happy to have a look at them.

"Sean is here for a couple of months so we can see what he is like and the rest have been training with us."

Bognor also had a much-changed side with regulars Stuart Tuck, David Piper, Chris Breach, Darren Budd and Luke Nightingale all missing.

But they held their own against their full-time opponents, particularly in the second half.

Evans, making his second appearance after joining from Woking, put the Conference visitors ahead after nine minutes with a superb free-kick.

He curled over the wall and into the top corner via the underside of the crossbar.

The lead lasted only four minutes, though, as Ben Watson pounced on a blocked Jamie Howell shot to slot under Rob Tolfrey.

Richardson's debut strike came 13 minutes before the break during a sustained spell of pressure from Crawley. He neatly steered a low cross from Scott Rendell into the far corner from close range.

The Rocks deservedly levelled for the second time 15 minutes from the end of normal time after good work by Watson.

The former Albion striker broke clear of the offside track and timed his square pass to perfection, leaving Seb Wallis-Tayler with a relatively easy finish from six yards.

Wallis-Tayler clinched a fourth round home tie against Eastbourne Borough for Bognor in the 113th minute when he volleyed through a crowded six-yard box from a Richard Hudson corner.
