Haywards Heath's dream of playing at Twickenham is over for another year.

They were beaten 13-12 at Dunstablians on Saturday in their delayed EDF Intermediate Cup quarter-final after fly-half Dan Penney missed a penalty from just inside the touchline with the last kick of the match.

One of the touch judges thought the ball went through the posts but he was over-ruled by his colleague standing behind him.

Skipper Dave Wattam said: "That just about summed up our season. It was a difficult kick 30 metres out and for a second I thought he'd got it.

"In the first half we took the game to them and played well but the subs they brought on at half-time seemed to give them a lot more solidity.

"It was quite a hostile place to play. There was a big crowd who you could certainly hear. In the second half we just couldn't keep hold of the ball for long enough but there was very little in it."

Heath out-scored their hosts two tries to one thanks to Penney and Adam Phillips, but the penalty count weighed heavily against Heath.

James Ellershaw scored Dunstablians try which was converted by Jon White.

White also kicked two penalties, the second of which had put his side a point in front with only two minutes remaining.

Hastings are back on top of the Sussex League after a club record win over Plumpton.

They ran in 18 tries in a 112-0 victory to go a point clear of Horsham. And thanks to Saturday's blitz, they also have a much better points difference than their nearest rivals.

Eight players scored tries with centre David Northen leading the way with five. Fly-half Kit Claughton scored four, right-winger Ben Campbell a hat-trick and left-winger Matt Harbord two. Others came from Alistair Coomb, Tony Roach and Tristan Todd. Jimmy Adams added 11 conversions.

Hastings' spokesman Len Bolton praised the attitude of Plumpton. He said: "They kept plugging away and there was no ill-temper in the game whatsover."

In the Sussex Trophy, Lewes beat Hove 24-3 to reach the semi-finals where they will face Heath or East Grinstead, who meet at Saint Hill on Sunday.

Despite being two leagues below their hosts, Hove gave as good as they got for an hour before Lewes added to their first-half try with three more in the last 20 minutes.

Scott Patto (2), Sean Taylor and Chris Eden got Lewes's tries with Nick Sharp adding two conversions. Alex Robertson got Hove on the scoreboard with a penalty.

Lewes skipper Chris Brant said: "We made quite a few handling errors so it was a relief to pull away in the end. Our league results have affected our confidence so this was a good morale boost for us."
