Charlotte Best eclipsed Great Britain star Hayley Tullett's 11-year-old record on her way to gold at the British Universities Indoor Championships in Sheffield.

The Crawley star shaved more than two seconds off the previous championship best time set by 2003 World bronze medallist Tullett as she stormed to victory in the 800m in 2min.5.32sec.

Best, 22, said: "I was hoping to win but the time was a bonus. I've had a really good winter's training and am now looking to build on this display to qualify for the European Under-23 Championships in the summer."

Hastings's Lee Emanuel also picked up a gold medal with victory in the 1,500m in 3min.54.22sec while Dan Stepney, of Phoenix, claimed bronze in the 800m in a personal best of 1min.51.92sec.

Ollie Freeman proved he is in top condition ahead of the new triathlon season by coming tenth at the English National Cross Country Championships.

The Sussex champion covered the 12k course at Herrington Country Park in Sunderland in 38min.51sec with Horsham's Andy Robinson back in 37th place.

Brighton and Hove City's Flo Ray was 19th in the under-20 women's race in 18min.59sec while clubmate Andrew Donno was 34th in the under-20 men's race in 34min.34sec.

l Robbie James was the top Sussex runner at the Hastings Half Marathon on Sunday, not Daniel Anderson as we reported yesterday. James, of Lewes, was 12th overall in a time of 70min.27sec.
