Laura Robson had an early indication of the hard yards ahead on her comeback from 17 months out with injury at Eastbourne today.

The former British No.1 won one game and was on court for less than an hour against Daria Gavrilova, the top seed in the qualifying event for the Aegon International.

Wildcard Robson, sidelined since last year's Australian Open by a wrist injury, was no match for the Australian-based world No.41 from Russia.

She struggled from the start in windy conditions on a packed number one court, serving four double faults in her opening game.

Robson's solitary success came in the first game of the second set as Gavrilova, with wins against Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic this year, romped past the former world No. 27 6-0, 6-1.

Robson said: "I've definitely felt worse, but also felt better, to be honest I think in a way it was a victory to just finish a match and be back on court, back playing tournaments and I'm very happy.

"It has been a lot of hard work, a lot of patience and I've had some great people helping me out the whole time in my coach and my team. I think as a team we've really worked through it together."

The scale of Robson's defeat could handicap her chances of a wildcard for Wimbledon.

Eastbourne's Johanna Konta, the British No. 2, has been handed a tough first round assignment against world No.34 Zarina Diyas.

Fellow wildcards Naomi Broady and Harriet Dart also face difficult tasks against Sloane Stephens and Dominika Cibulkova respectively.

British No.1 Heather Watson is up against Varvara Lepchenko.

The field for the 41st staging of the pre-Wimbledon showpiece at Devonshire Park features five former champions: Madison Keys (2014), Ekaterina Makarova (2010), Caroline Wozniacki (2009), Agnieszka Radwanska (2008) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (2004).

All of them, apart from Kuznetsova, have byes through to the second round as leading seeds.
