Sussex are off to a flyer in one-day cricket, helped by an “extraordinary” innings from David Wiese.

They beat old foes Surrey by two wickets in their opening Royal London One-Day Cup fixture of the season, chasing 275 in 50 overs at Hove.

Wiese held his nerve in what developed into a tense finale to finish 92 not out from 81 deliveries as his team won with 11 balls to spare.

Sussex skipper Ben Brown said: “It was an extraordinary innings from David Wiese, in particular.

“To come in there at a difficult time to bat and score at the rate he did, it was one of the best one-day knocks we have had in the team for a while.

“Luke Wright was fantastic at the top and Phil Salt got us off to a flyer against the new ball.

“It was a good start but I think the day belongs to David Wiese with that innings.”

Wright scored 69 for Sussex after Mir Hamza took 4-43 as Surrey were limited to 274-9 on a pitch which was not as quick as it looked.

Wiese said: “It was tough to score. You just felt if you spent time in the middle and got used to the pace of the wicket, there would be one or two you could get away. We felt if we could bat our 50 overs we would be there or thereabouts at the end.”

Sussex face Kent at Beckenham tomorrow (11am).
