Johanna Konta has beaten Anett Kontaveit 6-4 6-2 to reach the second round of the Nature Valley Classic in Birmingham.
The British No.1 from Eastbourne was playing her first match since reaching the semi-finals of the French Open having pulled out of the Nature Valley Open in Nottingham but she adapted quickly to the grass surface.
Estonian Kontaveit is only ranked two places lower than world No.18 Konta but the British player competed at a high level throughout and wrapped up victory in an hour and 12 minutes.
British No.2 Heather Watson suffered a third straight first-round defeat at the tournament as she went down 3-6 6-3 6-4 to Czech Barbora Strycova.
