Sussex want to know whether they can use Alex Carey in the Vitality Blast.

The Australia wicketkeeper misses tonight’s South Group opener at Hampshire as he is with the national squad.

Impressive performances in the recent World Cup have helped put him in the running for a place in the Aussies’ squad for the Ashes, which will be announced on Thursday.

Sharks host Hampshire at Hove the previous evening and would love to be given some guidance as to whether Carey will still be part of their plans.

It is believed head coach Jason Gillespie has an alternative option lined up.

Ben Brown keeps wicket at the Ageas Bowl tonight (7pm) although the match looks under threat with a poor weather forecast.

Gillespie said: “I’m hoping to get a steer. You would like to think Australia know what their Ashes squad is now.

“That’s a bit of a frustration but we have got to wait it out.”

Chris Jordan (knee) misses out tonight but is expected to be fit for Wednesday.

Rashid Khan has joined up with the squad and his T20 deal has been extended from seven matches to ten

Sussex have been struggling in the Championship but Gillespie is looking forward to a change of format.

He said: “It comes at the right time for us. The boys are excited about the opportunity to play Twenty20.”
