A virtually full-strength Crawley side made heavy weather of knocking Burgess Hill out of the Sussex Senior Cup with a 2-1 win at Broadfield Stadium on Monday night.

It was out of the blue when the home side went ahead on 38 minutes. Jiri Dohnal failed to clear and Reds' assistant manager Paul Raynor crossed for defender James Krause to score with a header inside the far post.

Hillians could certainly count themselves unlucky to have been behind.

Top scorer Shaheen Sadough was not positive enough when played through by Dave Piper and from the resulting corner defender Danny Gainsford caused problems at the near post.

Neil Watts was not far away with a couple of opportunistic strikes - the second from almost 50 yards.

The game opened up after Crawley's opener and Pierre Joseph-Dubois squandered a great chance when he was put through by Mustapha Carayol.

The trend continued after the break with Chris May twice denying Joseph-Dubois while substitute Romain Le Roux, whose former clubs include French League Nantes, impressed for the visitors on his first-team debut.

A superb right-foot half volley by Hillians' captain Lloyd Cotton evened things up after 65 minutes.

But seven minutes later Crawley sub Jon-Paul Pittman restored his side's advantage from close range after a great save by May denied Joseph-Dubois.
