John Suter admits he considered giving up football after being axed by Horsham YMCA.

Long-serving Suter was sacked by YM at the end of last season following relegation back to the County League.

Now he is preparing to go head-to-head with the club he managed for 19 years after taking over as joint boss of Hassocks.

Suter will work alongside Mick Jewell at The Beacon next season and he is looking forward to the challenge.

He said: "After what happened at Horsham YMCA I contemplated not being involved in football anymore.

"Now I have got my appetite back. Horsham YMCA is behind me, I cannot change what has happened and I am looking forward to things rather than looking backwards.

"Hassocks is a good club, a well-run club and run for the right reasons.

"I like the infrastructure they have got and I like the off the field progress they have made.

"I like the facilities. They are doing the pitch, next year it will be the floodlights and clubhouse and there is potential to go forward."

Jewell had already been appointed as the successor to Dave John, who moved aside to become director of football after 17 years in charge at the end of the season.

Suter will not be making sweeping changes - that is not his style - but he is looking forward to finally working with Jewell.

He said: "Mick Jewell approached me and said he wanted me to go to Hassocks with him.

"I was on the shortlist at Crowborough but I am not sure if that would have been right. I have known Dave John for 30 years and known Mick Jewell for a long time and it seemed right.

"There have been several times in the past where Mick and I have almost got together but it has never been the right time or the right place.

"I have never been a joint manager before but the assistant manager or coach always has a say so we will see how it goes.

"I have not gone there with any preconceived ideas. I will sit on the fringes to start with and assess the situation with Mick and Dave John."

How do you think Hassocks will do next season under their new joint managers?
