Brighton coach Neil McGovern admits it can be hard to be too critical after another big win.

That is why he is looking forward to the different challenge of a cross-border cup tussle.

The Blues, who have dropped just one point in the league this season, are relishing an EDF Energy Junior Vase tie with Old Walcountians at Waterhall tomorrow (1.45pm).

But a run in the knockout will be scant consolation if they fail to win promotion.

McGovern, Brighton’s first-year coach, said: “I don’t want to get them too carried away but the prize at the end of this competition is a cup final at Twickenham.

“The priority for us, though, has to be to get out of Sussex One. If we do that we will have a much more consistent level of fixtures next season.

“At the moment it is difficult to pick holes in any aspects of the performance when you have just won by 60 points.

“What we have to do is constantly talk to the boys about maintaining our own standards and our own ideas of what is a good performance.”

Walcountians offer a trip into the unknown, which should keep everyone focused.

They surrended their 100% league record last week when they lost at Teddington, who took over at the top of Surrey Two as a result, but are averaging 40 points per game.

“The cup game will be tough,” added McGovern. “The Surrey leagues are a good standard.”
