Wade Bennett-Jackson returns to Sussex to compete in the County Track and Field Championships at the K2 Centre this weekend.

The former Worthing athlete, who shot to prominence a few years ago, is entered into the 100 and 200m.

Now 22, Bennett-Jackson moved away from Sussex to further his career and he ran the fastest 100m time at the 2006 World Junior Championships, although it came in a heat and he only could not repeat it in the final where he finished sixth.

He now trains with Linford Christie at Brunel University and his personal best in the 100m is down to 10.33, set in Beijing at the World Junior Championships.

Bennett-Jackson’s 10.84 set in 2003 remains a Sussex Championships best at under-17 level and he will be favourite to take the senior title on his return to the county.

He has been warm weather training in America.

A good weekend is in prospect at the Crawley venue with Great Britain internationals Gavin Thompson and Joel Kidger expected to contest the 1,500m as they continue their recovery from injuries.

Mick Jones maintains his proud record of competing at these championships and the former Commonwealth hammer champion will be chasing a 26th senior gold medal.

An eye-catching race in the women’s events will be the 400m where Helen Reynolds, who is now running under her married name, will be defending her title against some great young talent including Kelly Denyer and Carley Wenham.

Denyer, 18, is entered in the senior race although she could still compete at under-20 level and will be chasing a qualification time for the European Junior Championships in Serbia in July. She will be up against Sarah Tomlins plus Crawley duo Reynolds and Wenham, now 21, who is rediscovering the form which made her one of the top juniors in the country a few years ago.

Athletes will be in action at under-13, 15, 17 and 20 levels as well as the senior events.

In the under-15 boys’ events there is a hotly anticipated showdown between Brighton’s Toby Rottner and Worthing’s Craig Dummer, who is chasing the England Schools qualification time.

The action starts at the K2 Centre, Crawley, at 11am both tomorrow and Sunday.
